As the temperatures start to warm up, one of the most overlooked things in personal care is updating our skincare routine to adapt to the needs of our skin in the changing climate. With Summer comes more sun exposure, increased exposure to the elements, and higher risks of dehydration—all of which can impact your skin in a variety of different ways. Unfortunately, many people unknowingly make skincare mistakes that can ultimately lead to irritation, premature aging, and breakouts. As a skincare enthusiast, I’m here to help you avoid these common summer skincare mistakes so you can keep your skin healthy and glowing all season long.

Summer Skincare Mistake #1: Over-Exfoliating Your Skin

Exfoliating is an essential part of any skincare routine. This is because it helps remove dead skin cells, which promotes cell turnover, prevents clogged pores, enhances product absorption, stimulates circulation, and smooths skin texture. However, like most good things, it must be done in moderation. And this is particularly true during the summer. Because over exfoliating in the summer can actually do more harm than good to your skin. This is because increased sun exposure can make your skin more sensitive, and excessive exfoliation can strip away its natural protective barrier. This can then lead to excess redness, irritation, and even breakouts.

Expert Tip: Opt for a gentle exfoliating routine using a chemical exfoliant instead of a physical exfoliant to dissolve dead skin cells gently. Expert Tip: Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily. And then be sure to reapply it every two hours.
